COVID case rates decline

August 18, 2022

Both new cases of COVID-19 and related hospitalizations dipped in Nebraska last week, mirroring a downturn nationally.

The Omaha World-Herald reported on Tuesday, the weekly case count for the week ending Friday came in at 2,907, well below the prior week’s 3,726 new cases according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data. For the last 10 weeks the weekly case numbers have ranged between 3,000 and 4,000. The number of hospitalizations was down from 206 the prior week to 197.

Nationally, cases and hospitalizations also are trending downward. Nebraska’s per-capita case rate is about one-third below the U.S. rate.

However, the U.S. is still recording about 600 deaths per day attributed to the virus.

With school starting across the country, health officials expect the number of cases will spark upward.
