SHS volleyball team scrimmage today

The Superior High School volleyball team will hold a pre-season scrimmage at the high school gymnasium today (Thursday) at 5:30 p.m. The team will host Exeter-Milligan for a pre-season jamboree game Monday at 6 p.m. at the high school gymnasium.

SHS football

Autumn may not be in the air Friday at Superior's Brodstone Field but the sounds of football will be. The Superior Wildcats open their 2022 season against the Alma Cardinals with a scheduled 7 p.m. kickoff.

It will be Parents' Night for members of the football and cross country teams.

The Superior High School Drill Team will provide fan support on the sidelines as well as perform their flag routine at halftime. Members of the squad are Brooklynn Grabast, Laci Kirchhoff, Neah McMeen and Haley Blackstone, senior class members, Nadia McMeen, Lilly Edwards and Nevaeh Wilhelms, junior class representatives, Halle Bargen and Faith Butler, sophomore class members and Cora Schnakenberg and Kaitlyn Nielsen from the freshman class.

The Superior School Band, under the direction of Allison White, will be present. The Wildcats return to the 8-man football format this season after two-years of playing 11-man in Class C-2. A decline in the number of participants led to the change. The major difference between 8-man and 11-man, aside from the number of players, is the field. It is 80 yards in length and not as wide in 8-man which lends itself to more offensive action. The other difference is that Superior now plays in Class D-1 and is ineligible for post-season play.

The Wildcats look to lean heavily on their running game this season. They are relying upon a staunch defense to keep their opponents at bay.

Members of the 2022 Wildcat varsity and junior varsity football teams are seniors Cristian Avalos, Owen Perrie, Aiden Humphries, Ashton Grassman, Jacob Meyer, Aaron Allgood, Austin Roberts, Luke Jameson, Henry Griljava, Anders Webber and Riedar Vier. Junior class members are Tyler Everhart and Seth Griljava.

Sophomore class representatives are JaCobey Beck, Marcus Martin and Christian Osweiler.

Freshman class members are Kyler Boyles, Lincoln Sander, Cooper Sheely, Dayne Clark, Declan Miller and Mason Korb.

Paul Heusinkvelt serves as head coach. The assistant coaches are Seth Going, Derek Clark and Ryan Renz

Student managers are Aaron Heusinkvelt, Zehke Kobza and Levi Clark.

SHS girls golf

The 2022 Superior High School girls golf team enters the season with lofty goals and the drive to exceed them. The team celebrated a Cinderella season in 2021 when they earned a berth at the state tournament in their first year of play. Their goals this year are to win the conference title, earn a return to the state tournament at the district match and notch a top three finish at state. Lofty goals indeed but this group has the confidence and work ethic to make it happen.

There is an easy camaraderie among the team members as they tease each other and exchange bits of their lives with each other. When they hit the course, it's a take no prisoners attitude as they are laser focused on their game.

The team lost one player to graduation but the returning five members have a year of hard won experience on their resumes.

Team members are Haley Blackstone, Neah McMeen and Lauren Tietjen representing the senior class. Nadia McMeen is the junior class member while Rayne Biltoft is the sophomore class member.

The team has acquired new uniforms for the season, featuring white skirts and black tops.

Coaching duties are handled by Kirk Utecht, who returns as head coach.

The Wildcats open their journey to the state tournament today (Thursday) with a match hosted by Central City at the Valley View Golf Course. The team travels to Grand Island , Monday, to play a match hosted by Doniphan-Trumbull over the Indianhead Golf Club course.
