Superior Wildcat 2022 football team played their first home game last Friday against Alma. The weather was perfect for football and mosquitoes at Superior's Brodstone Memorial Field Friday as the Wildcats opened their 2022 season with a 52-20 loss to the Alma Cardinals.
Prior to the game, members and parents of the athletes of the football and cross country teams were recognized as part of the Parents' Night celebration.
A porous defense, conditioning issues and injuries contributed to Superior's woes.
Superior returned to 8-man football after two years of playing 11-man. The bleachers were filled with fans out to support the team. The band was playing as drill team members encouraged the crowd to be vocal in their support.
Both teams displayed first-game jitters in the first quarter, Alma managed to put the ball in the end zone but failed to convert the point after touchdown. The Cardinals held a 6-0 lead after the first quarter.
Aiden Humphries, Superior's starting quarterback, left the game after a hard hit in the second quarter. Jacob Meyer stepped up to take his place. On what appeared to be a broken play, Meyer connected with Kyler Boyles for the Wildcats' first score. Superior was unable to add another score as penalties set the team back. Alma continued to move on the offensive side of the ball and entered the half with 24-6 lead.
Tyler Everhart was hobbled with an ankle injury.
The Superior High School Drill Team entertained the crowed during halftime. The Superior High School Marching Band took to the field and performed a Pink song as part of their 'Hits of the 2000s' routine.
The halftime respite did little to improve Superior's play.

Alma continued to roll offensively as the Wildcat defense was unable to stop the onslaught. Alma led 46-14 at the end of the third quarter. Meyer tossed another touchdown pass, this time to Aaron Allgood with Boyles taking the two-point conversion into the end zone.
Boyles added a touchdown run with five seconds remaining. Alma took away a 52-20 win.
Boyles covered 117 yards on his 18 carries. James Love picked up 67 yards on 18 carries.
Humphries completed two of four passes for 18 yards. Meyer was three for four in the passing department with two touchdown throws. Humphries and Meyer each had a pass intercepted.
Superior will focus on penalty reduction and improved line play as they prepare for Friday's contest.
Nuckolls County bragging rights are up for grabs as Superior travels to Lawrence, Friday, to take on the Lawrence-Nelson Raiders. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
