The Jewell County Historical Society's museum opened in downtown Mankato in 1977. In conjunction with the open house held on the last Saturday of May, The community's main street was lined with old machines and a newspaper report of the event said their chugging, banging and clattering were deafening.

The Jewell County Historical Society's museum opened in downtown Mankato the last Saturday in May,1977. Downtown was lined with old machines including the one pictured above. An open house is scheduled this Saturday. There will be another open house to celebrate the reorganization of the museum.

But the crowd gathered in Mankato did not seem to mind as the noise was part of a the holiday atmosphere which filled the afternoon.

There was plenty of local entertainment on hand including square dancing grade schoolers and gospel singing Baptists. Free ice tea, lemonade and cookies were available at the museum where more than 100 years of Jewell County history was preserved.

Now it is 2022 and there will be another open house this Saturday to celebrate the reorganization of the museum with the goal of better displaying not only more than 150 years of Jewell County history but items from the prehistoric days when giant mastodons roamed Jewell County.

The Jewell County Historical Society was organized in 1959. The society's board members in 1977 were Dick Judy, Mrs. Bud Hills, Mr. and Mrs. Rod Weltmer, Opal Joy Bothwell and Rex Headrick.
