SHS girls basketball off to fast start

The Superior High School girls basketball team is off to a hot start for the 2022-2023 season.

The team downed the Sutton Mustangs, 43-30, at Superior, to win their season opener Thursday. They followed up with a convincing 52-36 win over the Republic County Buffaloes at Belleville, Saturday. The Wildcats played the Fairbury Jeffs, at Fairbury, Tuesday, with game results unavailable at press time.

Superior opened up a 26-10 halftime lead against Sutton and cruised to 43-30 win. Republic County played a closely fought first quarter to trail 15-13. The remainder of the game was a different matter as they trailed 36-17 after two quarters of play. Superior held a 52-23 lead going into the final period. It was a cruise control final period as they sailed home with a 55-30 win in the books.

Sadie Cornell, Superior, is not to be deterred by a Republic County defender Saturday at Belleville.

Halle Bargen, Sadie Cornell and Ella Gardner scored 12 points apiece to lead the Wildcats offense against Sutton. Lilly Edwards added three points. Faith Butler and Madison Heusinkvelt scored two points each. Bargen was the leading rebounder with seven. Laci Kirchhoff landed five rebounds. Cornell and Ariana Heusinkvelt accounted for two rebounds each. Butler and Gardner came away with four rebounds apiece. Rayne Biltoft, Lily Edwards and Madison Heusinkvelt each had a rebound.


Bargen and Cornell topped the Superior scoring chart against Republic County with 15 points apiece. Gardner posted six points. Butler and Ariana Heusinkvelt provided five points each. Kirchhoff supplied four points. Biltoft scored three points. Madison Heusinkvelt listed two points. Bargen cleared away 10 rebounds. Madison Heusinkvelt grabbed six rebounds. Ava Kirchhoff, Laci Kirchhoff Gardner and Cornell cleared three rebounds apiece. Ariana Heusinkvelt had two rebounds.


Superior hosts the Wilber-Clatonia Wolverines at the high school gymnasium Saturday for the Parents Night game. The Blue Hill Bobcats visit Tuesday for a game.
