Big Kansas Road Trip to come to Jewell County - May 4-7

February 2, 2023

The Big Kansas Road Trip (BKRT) has been held since 2018 with the exception of 2020 because of COVID. This experience is a four day exploration for travelers to experience selected communities so they are able to learn about rural areas through first-hand experiences. This year, the Kansas Sampler Foundation chose Jewell, Republic and Smith counties. The Big Kansas Road Trip will take place May 4 through 7.

There will be a list of attractions visitors may choose from so they can plan their route. Core members of the BKRT are members of the Kansas Explorers Club, yet all who attend could be described as the exploring public. The best experience of the BKRT is knowing the communities are expecting the explorers. They desire eating and shopping at locally-owned businesses. Explorers want any “behind-the-scene” information available.

Each explorer, or family of explorers, will choose their own route based on their choices of attractions. The best part is it is done at the explorers’ own pace. It is projected there will be hundreds of people, but attractions being spread through the three counties will lessen the likelihood of large crowds at one time. Most visitors will explore Thursday through Saturday, with smaller numbers on Sunday.

Explorers are encouraged to eat locally, but the local restaurants shouldn’t order or prepare a lot of extra food, as visitors are told to expect popular restaurants might run out of food and to have back-up plans such as stopping at a local grocery store.

Previous communities have had tours of local attractions, interesting talks that even locals would want to hear, scavenger hunts, small concerts with local musicians, open houses at places rarely open, driving tours of county landmarks, and tea and cookies, a lemonade stand, s’mores at a lake or pond and pie on the porch.

Some of the attractions that can be found in Jewell County are the Limestone Jail and Ad Astra Mural in Mankato, the Antique Bank Alarm and Emerson Lake in Jewell, the Burr Oak School and Museum, the Esbon town name and the Formoso School Site. There are many other attractions that can be found at bigkansasroadtrip.com under the ‘Things to do’ tab.

All explorers, both local and visitors are to come explore in May.
