L-N Raiders lose 'shoot-out' to High Plains 20-47

Late season games often are given more importance than maybe they should have, but then again, maybe they should have the attention they get.

Last Friday, the Raiders played High Plains High School in Clarks. Both teams carried a 4-2 record into the game and for a while it seemed the game would live up to the potential of a "good" game.

But, then again there is that old adage: "There's good luck . . . there's bad luck . . . and sometimes there is just no luck at all."

The game will go into the record as a 20-47 loss to High Plains (HP), but just the score is deceiving. The teams battled in the first half of play before a number of turnovers by the Raiders gave HP a definite advantage and the winning score.

Score by quarter:

L-N 6 8 0 6 - 20

HP 3 14 14 16 - 47

Quarter No. 1: One of the more unusual 12 minutes of play we've seen this year. The Raiders kicked to start the game but HP had possession for most of the next nine minutes of play. They moved the ball 60 yards, but the Raider defense stiffened as HP's kicked a field goal to possess an early 3-0 lead.

However, after the kick off, L-N had possession of the ball for 11 seconds. On the first play, Wyatt Frey slipped through the left side of the line and raced 65 yards to score. The point attempt after touchdown failed and the score stood at 6-3 in the Raider's favor. HP had possession for the remained of the period and punted just as the period ended.

Quarter No. 2: L-N put together an eight play, 50 yard scoring drive to earn a 14-3 lead when Frey scrambled over the goal line on a one yd. run. The point attempt after touchdown pass from Frey to Jace Hoelting was good.

HP recovered their composer and scored twice in about a two minute span. Once on a 44 yd. drive and once on a Raider fumble which they picked up and ran for a touchdown. Score at half time was 14-17.

Quarter No. 3: L-N gave up another turnover allowing HP to score followed up by giving HP a 51 yard run to score again.

Quarter No. 4: HP scored first in this period, but the Raiders did not give up. L-N put together a 13 play, 65 yard touchdown drive in the middle of the period, but could not overcome the HP lead. 20-47. The touchdown came on a three yard pass to Colton Menke. The point attempt after touchdown failed.

Turnovers via interceptions and fumbles really hurt the Raider cause and then after a great first half of play, L-N drove the ball inside the HP's red zone three different times but could not score.

Sometimes you have no luck at all.
