It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Donald “Don” R. Skalka on June 29, 2024, at the age of 81. Born Dec. 6, 1942, in Deweese, Nebraska, Don was a proud graduate of Nelson High School. He later went on to study drafting at the Milford Trade School. Following graduation in the summer of 1964, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served honorably until 1968 and achieved the rank of sergeant. Marlene Joyce Gates Houtwed was born Oct. 21, 1931, in Milford, Nebraska, to Mildred Arwine. She was adopted by Dale and Ruth Gates in January 1932. She attended school in Fairbury and graduated from high school in 1949. She then attended Fairbury Junior College and graduated in 1951. Susan Mary Kimminau, 71, of Beloit, Kansas, died on July 23, 2024. She was the youngest of 11, born on July 12, 1953, to William Joseph and Loretta Catherine (Weingardt) Kimminau. She attended a country school in Jewell County. She lived the majority of her life with her parents on the family farm. In 2000, she moved to Beloit, where she resided with her brother, David. Richard Lynn Corman was born Oct. 18, 1948, in Davenport, Nebraska to Vernon and Betty (Anderson) Corman, the first of four children.
