Harvest accident claims life of Mankato resident

While this newspaper has been able to obtain the confirming report from the Kansas Highway Patrol, a resident of Mankato, Shawn Newell, apparently lost his life Monday afternoon in a truck accident near a Mankato water system pumping station.

WIBW reported Newell, 59, was killed when the semi-trailer truck he was driving crashed. The accident was reported at 3:10 Monday on Q Road just west of 170 Road. The location is about a mile northeast of Mankato.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash occured as Newell was driving a 1976 International semi-truck west on Q Road and negotiating a southbound curve. For an unknown reason, the truck entered the west ditch, overturned and came rest on its top.

Newell, who was alone in the truck, was pronounced dead at the scene.
