The Raider boys' basketball team entertained Deshler last Friday in Nelson and the game reminded me of an old bit of wisdom I learned some place. It went like this: "What do you do when you find yourself in a deep hole?" Answer: "You stop digging!"
For the final regular season game of the season, one of the top teams in class D-1 came to Nelson last Friday. Deshler came into the game with a record of 14-5 and it didn't take too long for them to demonstrate their ability.
L-N 7 5 18 18 – 48
Deshler 22 10 15 10 – 57
This reporter had not seen Deshler played yet this season, but they had to have put together one of the best eight minutes of basketball they could for the season during the first period of the game. Deshler's tall center controlled much of the quarter with his presence and scoring. Deshler connected on eight of 10 field goals. Meanwhile, the Raiders scored on two of nine shots, those being two 3-pt. shots by Krayton Kucera. Cole Troudt scored the other point by L-N in this period. The high point in the period was that L-N forced five turnovers from Deshler which were
about the only time they didn't score.
The Raider defense did improve in the second period, but the offensive production did not improve.
Finding themselves down 22 points early in the third period, the Raiders turned their game around. They shot less than 20 percent in the first half and
in the second half they made just over 50 percent. That, with a reduction in turnovers and improvement in defensive rebounds they eventually reduced
the deficit to the final nine points.
Krayton led all scorers in the game with 21 points. Cole Troudt had a good offensive å game with 11 points.
