Jewell Co. shaking again

Earthquakes

 


A cluster of earthquakes shook Jewell County a week ago today with the strongest, a 4.1 magnitude quake starting the day. All were in an area defined by Formoso, Randall, Jewell and Mankato. No damages or injuries were reported.

The first was centered south of Formoso and reported at 6:35 a.m.

The second quake came 12 minutes later at 6:47 a.m. It was a 2.6 magnitude quake. The third came at 7:16 and measured 2.3. The fourth struck at 8:04 and measured 3.2. The fifth struck at 1:20. It measured 3.5.

The Kansas Geological Survey said the strongest of the quakes was centered southwest of Formoso, north of M Road between 250 Road and 260 Road. The second quake was about a mile north of the first between N Road and O Road on south and north and 250 Road and 260 Road on the west and east. The third quake ad just north of O Road and east of 260 Road. The fourth was centered north of L Road and east of 250 Road. At 1:20 p.m., the fifth quake was centered north of L Road and east of 260 road. At 4:52 a 2.5 magnitude quake was center on 270 road between N and O roads. The last came at 11:12 p.m. It was centered north of N Road and east of 260 Road, It measured 2.8 magnitude.


Kimberly Wade, this newspaper’s Formoso correspondent, report the earthquakes have most everyone in Formoso shook up. A few slept through the first and biggest one but it got the attention of many. The multiple earthquakes were the most and strongest Formoso has experienced since 2013. The seven quakes was the most ever for a single day.
