Cross-Country bicyclist visits Jewell County

Traveling from Savannah to San Francisco On Bike

On Wednesday, May 12, traveling west on Highway 36, you may have noticed a bike rider with his bike loaded with survival gear. This was 48-year old Patrick Holland-Moritz.

Originally from Germany, Holland-Moritz began his "bike across America" trip from Savannah, Ga., at the end of March. His goal is to be in San Francisco, Calif., by the end of July. When he arrives in San Francisco, Holland-Moritz will stay with friends before traveling back home by plane.

Riding 50 to 60 miles a day, Holland-Moritz mostly camps in city parks overnight. He said he has had this venture in mind for many years. Holland-Moritz believed since the country is reopening at a slower pace, this trip would be a great way to make a new start.

"There's always a risk," Holland-Moritz said when asked if he had any fears about his journey. "But on the otherside, there is so much to see and people to meet." Holland-Moritz's family also have fears that something may happen to him, but with his frequent updates, they enjoy being able to experience his journey vicariously.

A good lesson learned from Holland-Moritz is there is always a risk in life, but that should never prevent you from chasing your dreams.
