SHS girls golf at district match

October 7, 2021

Inclement weather led to the cancellation of the Superior High School girls golf team final regular season match Thursday. The Wildcats were set to compete at the Centura Invitational at Cairo. The possibility of thunderstorms and heavy rains led to the match being cancelled.

The Wildcats shifted their attention to the district match and a berth at the state tournament.

The last season Superior fielded a girls golf team was in 2014. Since then, individual girls have played with the boys team as there were not enough girls to field a team. Three girls who played on the boys team in the 2021 season took it upon themselves to rejuvenate the program. They recruited more team members. They held fund-raisers to purchase new equipment including bags, uniforms and golf carts. The team has done well. They took first place at the Fairbury Invite. They have second and third place finishes to their credit. These were in matches with much larger schools and long established programs.

The members of the team are Emma Henderson, Rayne Biltoft, Haley Blackstone, Nadia McMeen, Neah McMeen, Laura Tietjen and Parker Litrell. Henderson is the lone senior member of the squad. Neah McMeen and Blackstone are juniors. Nadia McMeen and Lauren Tietjen are sophomores. Biltoft and Littrell are freshmen. The core of the team will return next season. With success will come additional team members to keep the program alive and well.

The Wildcats were on the course at Lincoln’s Hidden Valley Golf Course for the District C-1 match Tuesday. The team looked to qualify for the state match at the Elks Country Club at Columbus Monday and Tuesday.

The state Class C tournament is being played over the Elks Country Club course in Columbus Monday and Tuesday. Tee time for both days is 9 a.m. Live scoring is available on the Nebraska School Activities Association website.. Players will compete from the red tees. The front nine plays at 2,673 yards with two par five holes, five par four holes, and two par three holes. The back nine plays at 2,696 yards and has two par five holes, five par four holes and two par three holes. The tournament is a two-day affair. The state competitors play 18 hole round each day.
