New Rock Hills MTSS paraeducator

November 4, 2021

Emily Harkness, Rock Hills Elementary's new MTSS paraeducator, moved to Northbranch from Haviland, seven years ago.

At 25 years old, Harkness started work as a paraeducator. After a year, she worked as a college librarian at Barclay College. Harkness was then a stay-at-home mom for 11 years. This is her first year at Rock Hills Elementary.

Harkness met her husband of 16 years at Barclay College. They have four children, ages 5, 9, 10 and 12. They also have a dog named Royal. In her free time, Harkness enjoys reading.

Harkness said since this is her first year as a paraeducator at Rock Hills Elementary School, she expected the children would be the best part of the job. When asked what she believed would be the hardes part of the job, Harkness responded, "The children! Every day is a new experience." Responsibilities for Harkness include working with students in small groups to make sure every student has a great year.

Harkness loves the church family at Northbranch Friends. "My husband answered the call to serve as pastor," she said when asked why she chose to live in Jewell County.

COVID made Harkness's life difficult in some ways, but it also gave good opportunities to stop and reflect on what is important. "I just now started back to work," Harkness said. "So COVID hasn't made much of an impact careerwise."

"My parents and my relationship with Jesus inspire me," Harkness said. "I desire to serve Him."

Harkness is unsure of what aspirations she has. She leaves us with advice to those wanting to work in her field. "Take it one day at a time!"
