Roger Underwood

Roger Alan Underwood was born in Concordia, Kan, on Oct. 22, 1953, the son of Milton E. and Arleta F. (Heller) Underwood. Roger attended Esbon Public Schools, graduating from Esbon High School, with the Class of 1971. Following high school, Roger attended and graduated from Cloud County Community College with a degree in ag business.

Roger returned home following college to work on his family farm. He was united in marriage to Deanna K. Winters on Aug. 2, 1986, at the Methodist Church in Esbon. To this union of 35 years, two children were born, Lane and Lindsey.

Roger's passion in life were his family, his grandchildren and farming. He also enjoyed hunting, especially bow hunting, and was a member of the NRA and the Kansas Bow Hunters Association.

Roger died Dec. 29, at the Smith County Memorial Hospital with his family at his side, at the age of 68 years, 2 months and 7 days.


He is preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Glen.

He is survived by his wife, Deanna; son, Lane and his wife, Ashley, of Esbon; daughter, Lindsey Grauerholz and her husband, Gage, of Beloit; grandchildren, Mallory and Jack Underwood, with one grandson on the way; his brother, Rick and his wife, Kebby, of Bennington; sister, Kathy Holliday and her husband, Kirk, of Wichta; brother-in-law, Larry Winters and his wife, Terri; brother-in-law, Mike Winters; nieces, nephews and many friends.

Visitation was Tuesday, Jan. 4, at Melby Mortuary in Mankato. The family greeted friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

His funeral was at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 5, at the Esbon Community Church, with Pastor Rod Rose officiating, burial followed in the Esbon Cemetery.


Memorials are requested to the Esbon Community Church or the Esbon Community Center, and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
