Enrollment for the Rock Hills summer driver education program for 2022 will be at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday. Parents or guardians are welcome to attend this meeting. All questions about the program can be answered at this time.

To be eligible for enrollment in the driver education program, the student must reach the age of 14 years on or before the first day of class work, which is May 16, and have completed the eighth grade.

The enrollment fee is $132 for USD 107 students and $200 for students who live in the USD 107 district but do not attend Rock Hills. This fee covers textbooks, test booklets, handouts and learner’s permits.

Because of state regulations and USD 107 policies, all classroom tests and driving proficiencies must meet an acceptable standard in order for the student to pass and receive the certification of completion.

If a student does not meet 80 percent proficiency on the classroom tests, the students must do a makeup test at the convenience of the instructor. The student must have successfully completed all the car driving skills without instructor prompt to pass the driving portion of the class.

The classroom sessions will begin on Monday, May 16, and continue Tuesday and Wednesday. Class will begin promptly at 8 a.m. and will be done at 3 p.m. All students must attend these classroom sessions. The student will bring lunch each day.

Each student will drive five sessions until they have met the competencies without prompting from the instructor (a driving schedule will be developed and given to students prior to the end of the class sessions). It is hoped to have the driving completed with all students around the middle of June.

Upon completion of this program, the student will not receive a license; but, rather a certificate which indicates the successful completion of an approved course. This certificate of completion is valid for two years. This certificate must be taken along with their original social security card and a certified birth certificate, a parent and a licese fee to the driver’s license examiner.

When students get their restricted license at the age of 15, there are many advantages to the driver education program and the completion of it: possibility of lower insurance rates, better understanding of the automobile and its intended use, the reasons for the laws and an appreciation for their enforcement. However, all of this goes toward the primary goal of driver education which is to place safer drivers on roads and streets.
