Slow rain soaks area

Finally this area received the long anticipated soaking rain. The rain came in two shots. Some folks got rain and more hail and wind than they wanted in a storm that rolled through Friday night. For others it was a slow soaking rain that came throughout the day on Monday.

Nuckolls County spotters were called out Friday night when rotating clouds were observed and a dust filled front rolled across the county. The storm was just getting tuned up here and inflicted more damage in Clay, Fillmore and Thayer counties. While southern Nebraska was having tornados, hail and wind, snow was being reported in the northwestern part of the state. On Monday snow closed Interstate 80 into Wyoming and was observed in Adams County.

After the Friday storm, Mike Wallace reported 1.4 inches of precipitation and hail 3.5 miles west of Angus while 7.5 miles north of Nelson he measured 0.9 inches of rain and no hail. However, another gauge he had that location, only six feet away, measured a solid two inches, more than twice what the nearby gauge had captured. That same night, Kevin Bogus measured 0.67 inches at Oak and reported some dime size hail.

Lynn Koester, four miles north and east of Byron, reported receiving 1.33 inches of rain on Monday which was accompanied by some sleet. Steve Houtwed measured 1.26 inches of rain near Ruskin and Roger Bohling 1 inch at Deshler

Friday’s storm caused structural damage, overturned center pivot irrigation systems and left many people without electrical power. Wind gusts at the Superior Airport were measured at 68 miles per hour on Friday.
