James Ferebee

James Dwight Ferebee, the son of Arbor and Helene (Goodrich) Ferebee, was born on Nov. 19, 1930, at the family home 2 1/2 miles north of Nelson, Neb., the same house he died in on April 27, 2022, at the age of 91. This was his wish.

He attended Pleasant View Elementary School which was 1/2 miles north of the family farm. He told of checking traps in the winter on the way to school, and once in a while there would be a skunk in a trap. The teacher was none too happy with the odor. He graduated from Nelson High School in 1948.

He entered the army in 1952 and did basic training at Fort McClellan, Ala. After basic, he was shipped to England. While in the service, he was able to visit France, Germany and Switzerland. He attended Queen Elizabeth II's coronation parade. He was discharged from the service in 1954 and returned to the family farm near Nelson.

One day he was at Alexander Motors in Superior getting parts and saw a woman walking to work. He asked around and found out her name was Marian Bailey. The rest is history. They were married on Feb. 16, 1957, the 30th wedding anniversary of her parents. They were married at the Guider Rock United Methodist Church. They celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary days before Marian's death on Feb. 22, 2020.

To this union two children were born, Karen Sue and Allen Lee.

In 1974 they received the Aksarben Pioneer family award.

Jim always had a dog and most of his life it was a rat terrier that was named "Hugo." The family lost track of how many Hugos there have been. He enjoyed animals. In most of his early pictures, he is with kittens or dogs or some other animal.

He had a soft spot in his heart for the orphan kitten or dog he found on the river. He was still out feeding the bottle calf or lamb until this spring. He enjoyed watching the baby calves run and play.

He loved his family and always wanted to know what everyone was doing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Loren and Amy Bailey; wife, Marian; brothers and sister, Loren (Vivian) Ferebee, Gene Ferebee, Shirley (Elmer) Peterson, Phyllis (Carl) Hartman, Maxine (Lawrence) Williams; nieces and nephews, Dee Ann McCurdy, David Ferebee, and Kathleen (Dwayne) McGinnis.

He is survived by Karen (Terry) Daniels, Allen (Julie) Ferebee; grandchildren, Travas and Bethany Daniels, Anthony, Alexandria and Adriana Ferebee, Miranda and Colby Walton, Candice Wagstrom; great-grandchildren, Oaklie, Wyatt and Cade Walton; and sister-in-law, Violet Ferebee.

His funeral was at 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 4, at Nelson Community United Church of Christ, Nelson, with Pastor Ethan Feistner officiating. Music was "Amazing Grace," "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In The Garden," with Paul Hutchinson as the soloist and Mary Staatz as his accompanist.

Visitation was held on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m., with the family present from 6 to 7 p.m.

Pallbearers were Travas Daniels, Anthony Ferebee, Patrick Ferebee, Andrew Ferebee, Stephen Williams and Donald Williams. Honorary pallbearers were George Ferebee and John Ferebee.

Interment with military honors was in the Nelson Cemetery at Nelson.

Memorials are suggested to go to the family.
