James L. “Jim” Rehmert, 89, of Salina, died Thursday. He was born on Nov. 23, 1932, at Asherville, the son of Harry L. and Treca M. (Schaffer) Rehmert. He married Barbara Joan Slate on June 5, 1952, and to this union three children were born.
Jim went to schools in Asherville and Beloit. He served in the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers from 1953 to 1955, serving 18 months in Germany as a corporal running heavy equipment. He continued with his experience of running heavy equipment with the Kansas Department of Transportation beginning in 1952 in Beloit and transferring to Mankato in December 1955. Jim retired as superintendent in 1994 after serving 41 years. He and his wife moved to Salina in 1997.
Jim was a fix-it man, always repairing everything that needed fixed. He enjoyed trap shooting in his younger years. He was a life member of the VFW at Mankato, a former member of Harmony United Methodist Church, Mankato, and a present member of University United Methodist Church, Salina, where he served as a trustee.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marvalee Nightingale; and his son-in-law.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Barbara Joan; sons, Royce and Jon (Kimberly); daughter, Ramona Stimson; grandson, Micah Rehmert (Ellie); step-grandchildren, Steven Phillips (Tasha) and Krystal Jarman (Ken); and step-great-grandchildren, Karston and Harper PHillips.
Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, at Ryan Mortuary, Salina, with the family present from 5 to 7. A graveside funeral was held at 10 a.m., on Tuesday, at Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina.
