Ivan Frost receives Quilt of Valor

September 22, 2022

Brenda Frost Carlson pieced, quilted and bound a Quilt of Valor to honor her father, U. S. Navy veteran Ivan Frost. The quilt was awarded at a family ceremony on September 4, 2022, at Brenda's home in Sutton, Neb. Ivan Frost and his wife, Leta, are from Esbon, Kan.

According to the Quilts of Valor Foundation, a Quilt of Valor is a handmade quilt. It may be either hand or machine quilted. Quilts of Valor are awarded to veterans who have been "touched by war." The mission of the foundation is to "cover service members and veterans with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor."

The foundation was started in 2003 by a nurse, Catherine Roberts. As a nurse herself, Brenda Carlson feels a special connection with the Quilt of Valor program. Ivan Frost's Quilt of Valor is registered with the foundation and is number 169,814.

Wayne Frost, Ivan's son, read the Quilts of Valor Foundation message. This message is read to veterans at the time their Quilt of Valor is awarded.

The message emphasizes three things: 1. Honoring the veteran for being willing to lay down their life for their country. 2. Thanking the veteran for their service and sacrifice in serving our country.  3.  The foundation's hope the quilt provides healing, peace and comfort.  Brenda wrapped the quilt around her father's shoulders as the message was read.

Ivan Frost enlisted in the U. S. Navy on July 11, 1961. This was during the Vietnam War and shortly after his graduation from Esbon High School. Frost attended boot camp, winning academic honors, in San Diego, Calif.

Transferred to Nantucket Island, he served there for 9 months before being transferred to Bainbridge, Md. There he graduated Class "A" Yeoman School.

After a one-month stint at Imperial Beach, Calif., he was promoted to Armed Forces Currier and transferred back to San Diego, Calif. Until his discharge, he served as an armed bodyguard for high security Naval officers. The officers carried handcuffed briefcases with classified information and Frost carried either a .38 or a .45.

Ivan Frost was honorably discharged on July 26, 1964, with the rank of 3rd Class Enlisted.
