SHS volleyball goes 2-3 at St. Cecilia tourney

The Superior High School volleyball team played at the two-day Hastings St. Cecilia Tournament last Tuesday and Thursday. The Wildcats won both of their Tuesday matches, downing Lawrence-Nelson 25-15 and 25-15., in a two-set sweep. They then put away the Wood River Eagles, 25-15 and 25-15, for another two-set sweep.

Thursday was a different story. Cross County downed Superior, 19-25-, 25-23 and 19-25. The Heartland Huskies dealt the Wildcats a two-set 23-25 and 23-25, defeat. Hastings St. Cecilia swept Superior, 23-25 and 16-25, in two sets.

Superior hosted the Minden Whippets at the high school gymnasium, Tuesday with match results unavailable at press time. The Wildcats have a 12-9 season record going into the Minden match.

Teegan Duncan led the Wildcats killers against Lawrence-Nelson with eight. Madison Heusinkvelt put away six kills. Halle Bargen nailed five kills. Lilly Edwards added four kills. Ella Gardner and Brooklynn Grabast had two kills apiece. Heusinkvelt, Atlee Kobza and Sadie Rempel scored with two aces each. Duncan accounted for 10 digs. Kobza landed eight digs. Gardner handled six digs. Bargen collected five digs. Rempel listed four digs for the match. Grabast had two digs. Faith Butler and Edwards had a dig each.

Duncan topped the kill chart against Wood River with 13. Heusinkvelt contributed 10 kills. Grabast put up 3 kills. Bargen netted two kills. Edwards and Gardner had a kill each. Bargen, Duncan and Gardner each scored an ace. Bargen was the lead digger with 13. Duncan accounted for 11 digs. Rempel tallied 10 digs. Kobza added nine digs. Gardener took care of eight digs.

Duncan registered 13 kills against Cross County. Heusinkvelt totaled nine kills. Bargen left with six kills. Grabast recorded four kills. Edwards listed two kills. Gardner had one kill. Heusinkvelt recorded the lone Superior ace. Kobza led the diggers with 16. Rempel put away nine digs. Bargen held on with seven digs. Duncan landed four digs. Edwards, Grabast and Heusinkvelt each had a dig.

Duncan topped the kill chart against Heartland with 10. Heusinkvelt pounded down five kills. Bargen and edwards added two kills apiece. Butler had a kill. Bargen slashed through three aces. Heusinkvelt lashed through an ace. Kobza swept up 17 digs. Bargen cleared up 16 digs. Rempel finished the match with five digs. Butler added four digs. Duncan left with three digs. Heusinkvelt had a dig.

Duncan led the Wildcats with six kills against Hastings St. Cecilia. Bargen smashed down four kills. Grabast jammed down two kills. Butler, Edwards, Ariana Heusinkvelt and M. Heusinkvelt each had a dig.

Superior visits Henderson today (Thursday) for a match with the Heartland Huskies. The Wildcats host the Sandy Creek cougars at the high school gymnasium Tuesday.
