USD 107 BOE hires Zoey Gurka as an elementary para

The Boy and Girls Scouts made their way around Mankato bringing Christmas cheer. They stopped at the newspaper office and sang "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer." Staff members reported, "They were amazing."

President Kenny Mizner called the Dec. 12 regular meeting of the Board of Education for USD No. 107 to order. Those present were Mizner, Marc Grout, Brandon Hollerich, Wayne Frost, Bobi Fogo, Brenden Wirth, Justin Angleton, Rex Boley, Sam Meyers, Cassi Bozarth, Amanda Kendall and Janet Higer.

White Rock Electric installed the new lights in the bus barn and storage room. They will install the lights for the two classrooms at the practice gym over Christmas break.

Floor finish will be put on the gym floor at the high school and the practice gym on Dec. 27.

Two employees are taking defensive driving and medic first aide classes so they can drive the little bus. They will also be doing six hours of ride time and six hours of drive time. When this is completed, there will be a driver for morning pre-K.

Rock Hills Junior-Senior High School will be implementing a digital hallway pass system beginning second semester. It is thought this system will be able to better monitor the frequency and duration of the time students are out of the classroom. It will also be able to be able to eliminate students leaving classes to go to destinations that are unavailable at that time.

All middle school and freshmen ELA students recently completed a gratitude project that was hung in the hallway for display. The 6th graders also completed their antibullying posters for their 2nd Steps program. These are also hung in the hallway for display.

The FBLA chapter is working on achieving champion chapter status. This process includes developing partnerships with area businesses and promoting the interactions between the chapter and the businesses with such activities as guest speakers in class as well as job shadowing and other partnership activities. High school KMEA auditioned for honor band last Saturday in Hays, Hannah Simmelink, Davin Coil, Arielle Jacobs, and Faith Reinert attended.

Every elementary teacher involved in LETRS training has been to the second in person session. This training is allowing teachers to understand the importance of learning to read at an earlier age.

The annual family fun night was held Dec. 2. Families created an ornament, a craft, and decorated a cookie.

The state board of education is looking at new graduation requirements.

Work is being done on the Year 5 KESA OVT On-Stie and Accreditation reports. NCKC4 has purchased a used cargo trailer from state surplus for that Rock Hills may use to transport teaching aids & equipment between the four school districts. The governor's proposed budget for next fiscal year is soon to be out. It will come out about the same Consensus Revenue Estimates State of Kansas Nov 2022:

FY 2023 $794 million increase

FY 2024 $423 million increase

State of Kansas Cash Balances Projections: FY 2023 $2.31 Billion = 25 percent increase

FY 2024 $3.24 Billion = 35 percent increase

FY 2025 $3.54 Billion = 37.4 percent increase

Kansas State Board of Education has recommended to the governor and state legislators a 5-year phase-in to fund special education.

The district is getting bids on replacing doors and door jams of door that are rusting at the buildings. The district will look at the cost of keycard technology on outside doors.

Concrete quotes are being accepted to extend the long jump pits and to replace a segment of the sidewalk at the elementary school that students and staff walk on between the buildings.

The meter and gateway switches have come in. Work is being done to get them fully installed at the junior-senior high school. This will be used by the data analytics students and staff as part of their teaching curriculum and real world application of data analytics.

The district nurse has been communicating with parents about student immunization.

The district has received additional free COVID-19 Home Test Kits

Amanda Kendall, school nurse, went over her duties and discussed the changes in how immunizations are being handled.

The board approved the removal and reconstruction of replacement windows at the bus barn.

A special reindeer made a surprise visit to the school board office on Dec. 15, to greet the fifth grade carolers.

The board discussed a bid for cameras and air safety censors to be installed at the junior-senior high school. Mr. Meyers presented bids for cameras and installation of the cameras and air safety censors. Both bids were approved.

Mr. Boley and Mr. Wirth discussed the timeline for policy review, so the policy review team consisting of Brenden Wirth, Brandon Hollerich and Rex Boley, could give the board a recommendation. Mr. Wirth suggested that the staff and board should have their recommendations available by the January board meeting.

After a short discussion, the board appointed Brenden Wirth, Bobi Fogo and Wayne Frost to the negotiations team with Mr. Mizner as an alternate.

The board accepted the resignation of Amy Rice as elementary para effective Dec. 16. They approved hiring Zoey Gurka as an elementary para.

The next regular meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m., Monday, Jan. 9, in the board room of the district office.
