Shs girls basketball team goes 2-1

Madison Heusinkvelt is in the clear as she goes for two Superior points against Blue Hill last Tuesday at Superior.

The Superior High School girls basketball team basketball team saw their five game win streak snapped with their 62-55 loss to Southern Valley at Oxford, Friday. They had downed Blue Hill 63-50 at Superior last tuesda y.They began another win streak with their 57-52 win over Centennial at Superior Saturday.

Superior stayed close to Southern Valley but was never able to close the narrow gap. The Wildcats trailed 30-25 after two periods of play. They were behind 44-40 heading into the final period. They were unable to close the gap and recorded their first loss of the season.

The team bounced back Saturday against Centennial. Superior trailed 14-11 after the first period. The defense stepped up and Superior enjoyed a 26-18 lead at the halfway point. They opened up a 10-point, 40-30 lead as they headed into the final period of play. Centennial mounted a ferocious comeback bid but Superior was able to hold them off to record the win, 57-52.


Sadie Cornell led the Superior offense with 23 points against Southern Valley. Halle Bargen notched 10 points. Laci Kirchhoff added nine points. Ella Gardner netted seven points. Faith Butler and Madison Heusinkvelt scored three points apiece. Bargen hauled away 10 rebounds. Gardner and Kirchhoff nabbed seven rebounds each. Butler nailed down six rebounds. Heusinkvelt jammed the boards for four rebounds. Cornell had one rebound.

Cornell and Gardner scored 13 points each against Centennial. Butler and Kirchhoff tallied 10 points apiece. Bargen listed nine points. Ariana Heusinkvelt scored two points. Gardner and Kirchhoff collected six rebounds each. Bargen was good for five rebounds. Butler angled her way to three rebounds. Madison Heusinkvelt had a rebound.


The Wildcats go into the holiday break with a 6-1 record. Next up for Superior is the Runza Holiday Tournament at Central City, Thursday, Dec. 29.
