Blue Hill radar down for upgrading work

Blue Hill Radar to be upgraded

February 16, 2023

The KUEX Blue Hill Doppler Radar scheduled outage for a generator upgrade is today (Thursday) through Feb. 23. The radar will be out of service most of the seven-day period.

The radar will be taken down sometime today (Thursday, Feb. 16). It will return to service by Feb. 23.

Beginning today (through Feb. 23), if you are looking for the radar on the Nebraska Weather Service website, the data will not be available. Many radar programs combine radar images into one image. So while those images may depict precipitation with some accuracy, the data will be coming from nearby radars and “stitched together” to make a nice looking mosaic, but won’t contain any data specifically from the Blue Hill radar.

In the event of severe weather, meteorologists at the NWS Hastings office will use the nearby radars to diagnose storms and issue warnings.

The radar’s backup generator system will be completely replaced as part of a nationwide refurbishment.
