Joseph "Joe" Sullivan

Joseph "Joe" Patrick Sullivan, the son Eugene and Velma (Bailey) Sullivan was born on a farm Feb. 16, 1939, near Superior, Nebraska. He died February 17, 2023 at the CHI Health St. Francis Medical Center at Grand Island, Nebraska at the age of 84 years and one day.

He was baptized in the St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Superior where he was a lifelong member. In 1960, he was united in marriage to Nancy Harpham. To this union was born one daughter and four sons. They were later divorced. Joe married Lois Hanson on Feb. 14, 1975. His family grew with two step-daughters that he loved and claimed as his own. He dearly loved his family, they were the world to him.

Joe loved the land and was a dairy farmer with his brother, near Superior, most of his life, starting as a young boy. He was also a Nuckolls County commissioner for 28 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Nebraska Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Superior Elks Lodge and the Superior Country Club.

Joe enjoyed sports and was a great competitor. He especially enjoyed his high school years playing football, but also enjoyed boxing and participated at the state level. In his later years, he became an avid golfer and proudly displayed his hole-in-one plaque. For 10 years, Joe and Larry Juergens coached junior age boys to box in the Eagles boxing program. Their team won state three of those 10 years. This offered him a great deal of satisfaction and many friends.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Eugene and Velma Sullivan; brother, Eugene Sullivan; sister Mary Mallam; brothers-in-law, Bill Mallam and Joseph Diekemper and sister-in-law, Gayle Sullivan.

Survivors include his wife, Lois, and children: Theresa (Ken) Palmer of Albertville, Minnesota, Cindy (Cliff) White of Superior, Patrick (Leesa) Sullivan of Flower Mound, Texas, Mark (Katie) Sullivan of Omaha, Lori (Kyle) Kathrineberg of Lee's Summit, Missouri, Shawn (Rachel) Sullivan of Monticello, Minnesota and Joseph (Donna) Sullivan of Wilder, Idaho; 20 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren; brothers, John (Marlice) of Superior, Richard (Julene) of Superior, Francis of Superior, Michael (Jan) of Hamburg, Iowa; sisters, Ruth (Joe) Kripal of Hebron, Carol (Roland) Shambaugh of Superior, Patricia Diekemper of Wichita, Kansas and Kathy (Kevin) Bargen of Lincoln, Nebraska; along with additional brother and sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews and host of many friends.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 23, 2023 from the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Superior, with Rev. Ferdinand Boehme officiating.

Music was "Amazing Grace," "Ave Maria" and "How Great Thou Art" with Arnold Miller as soloist and Teresa Christensen as accompanist. Lector was Lane Hawley, Acolyte was Ron Rempe and servers were Nolan Meyer and Abram Carter.

Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m., on Feb. 22, with the family present to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Rosary services were held at 10 a.m. before mass Thursday.

Pallbearers were Daniel Duensing, Garrett Palmer, Preston Palmer, Joe Sullivan, Kyle Kathrineberg and Ken Palmer.

Interment was in the Evergreen Cemetery at Superior, Nebraska.

Memorials are suggested to go in care of the family.
