Sadie Cornell, Superior, blocks a Sutton player so Faith Butler can shoot a three point basket.

It was a disappointing end to a stellar season for the Superior High School girls basketball team. They drew a favorable draw in sub-district C-2 8 where they would vie for a berth in the district finals and a chance to advance to the state tournament. They had downed both Thayer Central, the number two seed, and Sutton, the number three seed, twice during the regular season.Unfortunately for the Wildcats, Sutton refused to follow the seedings script. They downed Thayer Central, Tuesday, while Superior disposed of Fillmore Central, 47-23, to enter the final round. Both games were played at the Superior gymnasium.

Sutton then played spoiler and edged Superior, 37-35, Thursday to advance to the district final. Superior was left high and dry as they were not high enough in the wildcard standings to earn an alternate slot to district.

Sadie Cornell led  the Superior offense against Fillmore Central with 23 points. Ella Gardner hit for 11 points. Halle Bargen dropped through five points. Laci Kirchhoff added four points. Lilly Edwards and Ariana Heusinkvelt scored two points apiece. Gardener hit the boards for nine rebounds Faith Butler and Kirchhoff grabbed six rebounds each. Bargen and Heusinkvelt collected three rebounds each. Edwards and Ava Kirchhoff added a rebound apiece.

Cornell provided 11 points for Superior against Sutton. Bargen generated six points. L. Kirchhoff listed five points. Butler and Heusinkvelt scored two points each. Gardner contributed seven rebounds. Bargen produced six rebounds. Butler and L. Kirchhoff accounted for four rebounds each. Cornell landed three rebounds.

For Ella Gardner and Laci Kirchhoff, the Sutton game was their final appearance as Wildcat basketball players. The seniors were significant contributors to the team's success, both on and off the court and their leadership will be missed.

Superior closed the books on the 2022-2023 season with a 20-5 record.
