Country Roads

Easter will be celebrated Sunday. This whole week is filled with observing the days before the Savior’s Resurrection. There is the Passover, Lenten, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday, then the Sunrise Services and the Easter Celebration Services that are planned and held in churches this area and beyond on Sunday. It is said that Easter Sunday, the church attendance almost doubles.

Easter memories for me mostly concern the Easter Sundays of my childhood. Getting up that morning and finding the prepared Easter baskets by our bedsides. Also, dressing up for church in our new outfits of chiffon dresses with the satin bows tied in back, white shiny shoes, white gloves, and the right hat. It was then off to the church. I remember the group singing, the choir singing, the Sunday School lesson and the pastor sharing. Then it was quickly back home to change clothes and head to either Grandad and Grandma’s house, or to one of the uncle and aunt’s homes for a delicious dinner. Even though the Easter dinners were so delicious, there were so many cousins there, it was more exciting to have play time with them. There was always room for aunt Norma’s cake she decorated to look like the Easter Bunny. After dinner, Uncle Bill would hide the Easter Eggs and all the cousins would see how many they could find, as he would be taking photos that would later be arranged and shown on a slide screen at other family dinners.

There were also the hometown Easter egg hunts held in the park where we’d hunt for the paper that was hid in a plastic egg. The paper told of a store in town to visit that would be handing out rewards, and usually a piece of candy along with a coin. Those special Easter egg hunts went on in our hometown long into my son’s youth. Now most of the local towns still have an Easter egg hunts but it is to find the hidden candy in the plastic eggs.

Easter used to draw families together, at church and later to the Easter dinner table. Now it doesn’t happen that way as often. Family members move a distance away, plan on taking in an event or trip somewhere else, or just don’t believe in attending church as used to be done together. Many of our family priorities have changed over the years. I’m thankful my Easter memories are special to me. I hope your families are preparing to make Easter memories for the children and grandchildren. Wishing all a Blessed Easter!
