The Superior Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire burning west of Webber Friday.

Arden Russell, a rural Jewell County farmer, was moving round hay bales when he noticed his feet were becoming warm from the tractor. He moved the tractor from the hay yard to the road where the tractor became engulfed in flames.

Scott Nondorf, Superior fire chief, reported five Superior units, with 11 responders, rolled to the scene. The Hardy Volunteer Fire Department dispatched four units and seven responders to assist in dousing the blaze.

Three round bales were destroyed in the fire. The International tractor was a total loss.

The units remained on the scene for two and a half hours. The department responded to a call for assistance at the City of Superior burn pit Monday afternoon. The page was cancelled before units arrived on the scene.

A fire burned more than 650 acres in Cass County over the weekend. The fire jumped the Missouri River from the Iowa side. It was finally contained late Monday.

The Superior department received a mutual aid request Tuesday afternoon from the Formoso fire department for assistance in fighting a blaze north of Lovewell. An out of control brush fire was believed to have caused the blaze. Weather conditions were ideal for the fire to grow with low humidity and a strong south wind.

Nondorf asks residents to be vigilant during as dry weather conditions continue to persist across the area.
