I admire those who are great in sewing and thread- creating talent. There are those who create such precious, colorful and well designed quilts. There are those who do beautiful crochet projects and some who can knit treasured creations. I have even had a mother show me leather creations her granddaughter creates. The daughter does custom sewing. Her mother showed me photos of the beautiful wedding and prom gowns she has made. I do admire my friends and relatives who can whip up stylish clothing items.

An almost lost art form of stitchery is tatting. I don’t think I know of anyone who currently does tatting creations. Years ago, my friend’s Grandmother Zula did tatting. My friend gave me a Christmas tree ornament her grandmother had tatted that was a beautiful covering for a glass ball. I cherish that precious gift and put it on our Christmas tree every year.

Though I’ve never seen anyone personally doing handmade lace work, I did watch a travel show on television where they presented a tour of Austria. One program was of women delicately making lace patterned items, all done by hand. I can’t imagine how they do that.

Recently a cousin, a talented quilter, put together a wonderful t-shirt throw for me, created using my late son’s t-shirts he wore in junior high and high school. She then pieced it together just right and then quilted it. I will always cherish that throw.

Another friend is always crocheting or quilting a project. I’ve been blessed that she has gifted some of her creations to me. A sister-in-law enjoys quilting and has made many warm and beautiful creations. I have a couple of table runners she made for me. My mother would piece together and quilt many cherished quilts in her later years. I’m glad my sisters, myself, other family members and friends received them as gifts.

Both of my grandmothers had sewing hobbies. One was a quilter and seamstress, and the other enjoyed doing embroidery works. I have some of their pieces. Everytime I hold or look at those, it brings out special memories of my grandmothers.

A friend can stitch beautiful counted cross stitch wall hangings. She has done many through the years. I must say I was blessed to have been gifted some of her creations that now adorn my walls.

My sewing talents are limited but I do some embroidery work. Once in a while, I do simple crochet or knitting projects. I did manage to piece each of my granddaughters a baby or youth quilt. I learned to sew on a machine in high school home economics and through the years, once in a while when a creative bug would hit me, I’d manage to sew some items but nothing to brag about.

I wish I’d been more talented in knitting, crocheting and quilting, but guess that just isn’t my calling. Those with that talent please stitch on!
