Go West young man . . . go west!

The Lawrence-Nelson Class of 2023 made a trip to the Elementary School last week to walk the halls one last time. Pictured (back row, from left) are Evan Jacobitz, Thomas Safago, Devyn Zikmund, Trev Mueller, Wyatt Hajny, Erik Wheeland, Krayton Kucera, Keaton Mazour, Tyson Kotinek, (front) Kelia McKaskle, Toby Kotinek, Emily Troudt, Katelyn Mazour, Chad Holcomb and William Dougherty.

That exclamation from over a hundred years ago rings true even now in the year 2023.

Seems that the Lawrence-Nelson High School Golf Team is planning to do just that . . . go west.

The reason for the trip is to take part in the State NSAA Class D Golf Tournament Tuesday and Wednesday at the Lake Maloney Golf Club in North Platte.

The Raiders won the trip by winning the District D-1 tournament in Grand Island last week. The boys carded a team best score of 335 for the champion title. Neighboring Sandy Creek also qualified for the State with a score of 358. The third team for an automatic berth was Elmwood-Murdock with a score of 364.

Besides winning the team title, three of the five Raider golfers ended up in the top ten medalists for the event.

It seemed that for most of the season, the Raiders had been changing places in-so-far as who ended the days with the best score. This tournament it was the time for Conner Janda to card the low score. Conner scored identical 37's for each nine holes for the event's top score of 74. Krayton Kucera had an 81 and Toby Kotinek scored an 82. Bayln Bargen rounded out the top four Raider golfers with 98 with the fifth player, Jacob Kathman came in with 104. (All teams field five players with the top four scores used for determining team scores.) A golfer finishing with a score in the top ten golfers also qualifies, even if his team does not qualify.

Thirteen teams composed the district competition.

L-N is no stranger to the state golf tournament, but a trip there is no sure thing either.

The 2022 team also qualified and the 2018 team made the trip so 2023 marks three times in the last six years teams achieved the recognition. Over the years a number of individuals qualified as being in the top ten medalists.
