Memorial Day Services at Sacred Heart Cemetery

Lawrence American Legion member, Robert Kotinek, salutes the grave site of Lawrence native, Chester Kohmetscher, a Korean Was veteran, during Memorial Day Ceremonies Monday at the Sacred Heart cemetery east of Lawrence. The Lawrence American Legion, the Legion Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion cooperate in providing Services at five area cemeteries. Helping provide the ceremony this year were: Commander, Paul Dale; Chaplain, Walter Buescher; acting Adjutant Robert Kotinek; Legion Auxiliary representative, Connie Dale; Color Guard Commander, Lyle Kohmetscher and the Firing Squad.

80 years later . . . Father Jamie Hottovy deliveries a homily looking towards the crucifixion grouping on top of the Memorial for Msgr. Charles Becker. Father Hottovy celebrated Mass at the grave site on Memorial Day with a large attendance at the event. Long time pastor of Sacred Heart parish, Father Becker, died in 1943, 80 years ago.

Other than Mr. Kohmetscher's grave site, others recognized at other cemeteries were: St. Stephen Cemetery, Art Hoelting; Evergreen Cemetery, Robert Williams; Oak Creek Cemetery, Larry Lucas; and Rosemont Cemetery, Joe Rose.

After the Memorial Day ceremonies concluded, the American Legion members enjoyed a noon meal and fellowship at the Legion Hall. In the evening, the American Legion and the Building Committee for the new Community Building for Lawrence cooperated in providing an evening supper for all.
