Mankato VFW and VFW Auxiliary 7830, joined with some of the Mankato Eager Beaver’s 4-H club on Thursday afternoon to place flags in Mount Hope Cemetery. This tradition, which began in 1868, places flags on veterans who have lost their lives. Each flag holder has a significant meaning that helps one to understand what war that veteran served in. Wars included are the American Revolution War of 1812, The Mexican American War, the Civil War, Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Gulf War, War in Afghanistan and the War in Iraq.

Some of the flags have symbols on the top that include the eagle which represents freedom in the United States of America, the spear which represents bravery and courage, and the golden ball. Some myths state the golden ball contains items that could be used against an attacker. However, these beliefs have been proven wrong. It has been found the main reason for the golden ball is safety when outside in the event of strong winds or storms.
