Dennis Way

 


Dennis M Way, husband, father, grandpa and great-grandpa joined his loved ones, granddaughter Haley and his parents in heaven on June 24, 2023 in Superior, Nebraska.

Dennis was born in Beloit, Kansas, on July 13, 1939, to Milo Way and Mabel West and was a Superior High School 1957 graduate.

He was united in marriage to Sharon McNitt on June 8, 1958, in Republic, Kansas. To this union three daughters were born: Sheila, Shelley and Stacey. They later divorced.

He worked at the Superior Animal Hospital for several years prior to starting his career position at Ideal Basic cement plant from 1965 until it closed in 1986. His lifelong dream was to be an auctioneer which earned him the nickname Colonel while working at the plant. After it closed, he worked at several jobs until he operated the Superior Waste Transfer Station north of Superior until he retired.

He enjoyed fishing. In his earlier years he was an avid coyote and coon hunter, owning many greyhounds and coon hounds. He was active in his daughters’ activities, which included coaching little league basketball at the auditorium. He also enjoyed attending all the sporting events at the Superior High School.

On August 23, 1996, he married Diane Clyde Fullerton. Together they enjoyed their retirement years camping with family and friends at Lovewell Lake and traveling in their camper to Texas for the winter months, which they did for several years.

More recently he enjoyed morning coffee with his friends at Alexander Motors and driving the country side watching the cattle and branding.

Dennis was a family man and truly loved time with his daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who were important to him. He was a 60 plus year member of Centennial Lutheran Church, Superior.

He is survived by his wife, Diane; daughters Sheila (Jim) Jaeb of Superior, Shelley Grabast of Brownwood, Texas, and Stacey (Dennis) Shroyer of Superior; seven grandchildren: Jeff Grabast and Amanda Gutierrez of Brownwood and Stephanie (Brian) Cortez of San Antonio, Amber (Jason) Funk of Amarillo, Kristen (Mike) Merkins of Hutchinson Minnesota, and Jared (Hannah) Shroyer of Superior; 22 great-grandchildren: Quinn and Swade Shroyer, Bayleigh, Breckyn and Beckett Bohlen, Caden and Alexis Highsmith, Kash, Jacyana, Hendrix and Lennen Funk, Ethen Jaeb, Emma and Emeri Flickinger, Dillon Grabast, Matyah Thompson, Andrew Gutierrez, Brianna Burkes, Jason Gutierrez, Aiden Lopez and Kyra and Kaleb Grabast, and his loving dog “Gus.”

His funeral will be held a t 2 p.m. today (Thursday) June 29, at the Centennial Lutheran Church in Superior, Nebraska with Pastor Greg Shaffer officiating and Heather Dahl as the organist.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jeff Grabast, Amanda Gutierrez, Stephanie Cortez, Amber Funk, Kristen Merkins, Jared Shroyer and Haley Shroyer Bohlen.

In honor of Dennis’s wishes, there will be no internment as his ashes will be spread over the farm at a later date.
