SYAA hosts 9 hole minature golf event

Dan Scott stands by one of several challenging miniature golf holes used for the Superior Youth Association's fund raiser this week. Various holes were hosted by local businesses.

A fund raiser held Saturday and sponsored by the Superior Youth Athletic Association was inspired by the Putt-Putt miniature golf game.

Putt-Putt began in 1954 and today is a registered trademark. The game is similar to miniature golf.

Superior once had a miniature golf course located in Lincoln Park and in later years had a traveling miniature golf concession based here. For a time that game was set up in the building now occupied by Las Canteras.

The terms mini golf, crazy golf, goofy golf and putt putt golf are often used interchangeably to refer to golf games but there are differences in the way the games are played and scored.

Mini golf usually has more obstacles than does putt putt which makes the game more challenging. Often mini golf courses have a theme. The putt putt concept is more of a no frills all skills version of miniature golf. For Saturday's game the clubs and balls were furnished.

Ava Kirchhoff was the second person to make a hole in one at the miniature golf tournament, a fund raiser for the Superior Youth Athletic Association held this week in Superior. She is pictured at Kenny's Lumber and Farm Supply in Superior. The course was in various businesses throughout Superior.

Saturday the SYAA patterned their game after the franchised Putt Putt style with holes located in sponsoring business places. Participants had to travel to each of the business houses to complete a hole. The final hole was played at the Superior Country Club.

Holes were located at Kenny's Lumber & Farm Supply Inc., Scott's Sales and Service LLC., LandMark Implement, Carmen's Style Shoppe, Superior Pharmacy, Inc., Gary Thompson Agency, The Corner Nook, Agrex and the Superior Country Club

Sponsors said the hole hosts went above and beyond expectations to make the event fun for everyone! Each host designed their hole. Winning teams included Team Frahm (Mankato Livestock, Inc.), Team Toe Lickers (Superior Outdoor Power), and Team Peterson/Sunday (Superior Industries).

The favorite hole selected by the participants was at Kenny's Lumber & Farm Supply Inc.

The event ended at the country club with mothers donating baked goods and Brodstone Healthcare grilling hamburgers.

Funds raised will go toward paying for uniforms, equipment and insurance costs for Superior young athletes. Plans are being formulated to hold a similar event next year.
