Fire marshal allows Superior schools to open Monday

August 24, 2023

Judi Roach (center) greets a member of one of the many families who attended the Superior Elementary open house last Thursday evening. In the foreground are Haley Coffey and her daughters: Katherine (left) and Lea. Roach is a fifth grade instructor. Among the interesting things in her classroom was an aquarium with Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches. She was inspired to get the cockroaches after attending the National Ag in the Classroom Conference where she met two entomologists, Kristie Reddick and Jessica Honaker also known as "The Bug Chicks."   She acquired the original two cockroaches October, 2021.  They require a temperature of 75 degrees and at least 50 percent humidity in their enclosure and will eat vegetables and fresh fruits. They also eat dry dog food.  She expects her fifth students will have fun adventure learning about these interesting little creatures.

Superior isn't the only area school district to have the start of school delayed by a construction project but it may have had the longest delay. Uncompleted construction also delayed the start of the Pike Valley Schools but delay was for two days, not two weeks like it was for Superior. Though work is continuing on the front entrance and office area the Superior Schools were allowed to open on Monday.
