For the week ending Sept. 24, 2023, there were 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 21 percent very short, 29 percent short, 48 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 29 percent very short, 35 percent short, 34 percent adequate, and 2 percent surplus.
Field Crops Report: Corn condition rated 12 percent very poor, 17 percent poor, 22 percent fair, 38 percent good and 11 percent excellent. Corn mature was 70 percent, near 68 percent last year and ahead of 64 percent for the five-year average. Harvested was 15 percent, near 12 percent last year, and ahead of 10 percent average.
Soybean condition rated 13 percent very poor, 17 percent poor, 25 percent fair, 36 percent good and 9 percent excellent. Soybeans dropping leaves was 86 percent, ahead of 79 percent both last year and average. Harvested was 14 percent, near 12 percent last year and 13 percent average.
Winter wheat planted was 60 percent, well ahead of 37 percent last year and ahead of 51 percent average. Emerged was 15 percent, ahead of 4 percent last year and 9 percent average.
Sorghum condition rated 4 percent very poor, 7 percent poor, 26 percent fair, 35 percent good and 28 percent excellent. Sorghum mature was 45 percent, ahead of 40 percent last year, but near 47 percent average. Harvested was 6 percent, equal to both last year and average.
Dry edible bean condition rated 2 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 25 percent fair, 54 percent good, and 13 percent excellent. Dry edible beans dropping leaves was 69 percent, behind 8 percent last year. Harvested was 37 percent, behind 42 percent last year.
Pasture and Range Report: Pasture and range conditions rated 8 percent very poor, 15 percent poor, 37 percent fair, 29 percent good and 11 percent excellent.
