Kerma, Forrest “Frosty” and Rachel Crouse have been selected to serve as the 2023 Jewell Corn Show Parade Marshals. The parade gets underway at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct.14.

Kerma is the daughter of Rex and Ilene (Roe) Headrick. She was raised five miles west of Jewell. She graduated with the Class of 1968 from Jewell High School. She continued her education at Kansas State University where she earned a bachelor and master’s degrees in physical education.

She began her 42 year career in education at Garden City.

She met her husband, Forrest, while teaching in the Garden City school system. He was a farmer. Frosty was from Missouri where he attended Kemper Military Academy. Frosty was a farmer in the Garden City area.

Kerma and Frosty purchased a house in Jewell in 2002 with an eye on retirement.

Kerma retired from teaching after 35 years in 2012 and Frosty retired from farming. The couple, along with their daughter, Rachel, returned to Jewell.

Retirement did not last long for Kerma as she accepted a position on the faculty of Chadron State College.

She resided in Chadron for part of the year to teach. She then taught on-line for the remainder of the academic year. She taught personal wellness classes as well as a human relations course for the Nebraska Department of Education

She retired for a second time in 2019.

Kerma and Frosty enjoy their outdoor time.

Frosty puts his welding skills to work creating yard art. His metal flowers are guaranteed to bloom year round. The couple enjoy feeding and watching the birds attracted to their yard.

Kerma found a second career when she submitted a story to the Jewell County Record. She was pleased with the response and has authored many stories about local historical figures and personages.

Kerma notes she loves doing research and that genealogy is her favorite hobby. Kerma and Frosty, along with Rachel, will be looking forward to the Corn Show.
