A day to be creative and paint all day makes for a remarkable day! On Wednesday, Oct. 4, six Lawrence-Nelson students in grades 9 through 12 participated in the 8th annual Mural Day at Hastings College. Students who attended the competition included seniors Sydney Biltoft, Jessica Sole, Claire Himmelberg; junior Addison McCloskey; and freshmen Tiffany Gonzalez-Gamez and Riley Haba. Mural Day is an art competition where students from surrounding towns participate to create a mural on a 3'x6' vinyl canvas. Mrs. Kylee Haba commented, "It is a great chance to let the students have creative freedom and to see what they come up with without assistance from the teacher."

Riley Haba (9) and Tiffany Gonzalez-Gamez (9) use their drawing skills to help out their team when drawing anatomically correct farm animals and a cowboy, leaving no details untouched.

The theme for this year was for participants to create a new Nebraska slogan. Students and their art teachers gathered around the Jackson Dinsdale Art Center (JDAC) parking lot at Hastings College around 9:30 in the morning, and they started their artwork soon after receiving the theme. They only got to work on their painting from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; then it was brushes down and hands up.

While having little time to think, the Lawrence-Nelson students quickly came up with the idea of "Keep your Feet in the Sittrups" as their slogan. Sydney Biltoft, senior participant, described the art they created as a way to show off "How we do it down here in Nuckolls County."

Mrs. Haba and the students agree that even though they didn't place, they believe their artwork finished at the top of the pack. They all seemed relatively confident and proud of themselves for the hard work they put into their mural, as they should because the finished product was well-thought-out and eye-catching from a distance.

The students are excited to learn more about art and continue to improve their skills so they can continue to develop another winning team Lawrence- Nelson in the years to come.
