Commissioners discuss solid waste concerns

The Jewell County Commissioners Brent Beck, Keith Roe and Ed Duskie met Nov. 20. Carla Waugh, county clerk, was present for the meeting.

P.J. Garst, solid waste director, discussed disposal of solid waste from the transfer station. He said that Hamm is increasing the price for transporting the waste to their Perry, Kansas location. P.J. is looking into an alternative option for taking solid waste to Saline County, but Jewell County would have to transport it. This would require purchasing a walking floor trailer. He said he was working with Wilkinson Walking Floor Trailers to locate a used trailer with the estimated cost of $100,000. The commissioners said the county doesn’t have the funds to purchase a trailer at this time and need to check out all options before making a decision. P.J. also discussed the repairs to the backhoe.

Don Jacobs, sheriff, discussed personnel. He discussed the Kansas Governor’s grant that was awarded to his department.

Joel Elkins, general superintendent discussed road and bridge maintenance. Brent Beck reported Kim Gillett’s road concerns. Joel  discussed bidding on a 2007 one-ton truck with a snow plow on an online auction. He had a water line agreement for the commissioners’ approval.

The commissioners approved Republic County Rural Water No.1 request to bury water line across a roadway in Grant Township between sections 13 and 24 or approximately 1/2 mile plus 200 feet west from the P Road and 310 Road intersection.

The minutes of the Nov. 13, commissioners meeting and the county canvassers meeting were approved.
