Superior woman killed, suspect held without bail

December 21, 2023

The unthinkable happened in Superior, after 11 p.m. Sunday.

News that a mother had been shot and killed sent shock waves rolling throughout the community and has been the main topic of discussion since.

While street conversation and news reports contain lots of information, some of it may be true and some may not. Those investigating the case are reluctant to say much with the investigation continuing.

Apparently the firing of a gun which left one person dead ended an ongoing domestic dispute.

Molly Gruber, 35, was taken by ambulance to the Brodstone Healthcare hospital and pronounced dead after reaching the hospital. She was found inside a residence at 1216 Idaho Street, one block north of the hospital.

After the gunshot was heard, several calls were placed to the 911 dispatch center including one from Sebastion Dunbar, 30, an occupant of the house.

The dispatch center requested an ambulance be placed on standby until the area could be secured. Wilbur Young, Superior’s chief of police, was the first officer to arrive on the scene.

Officers from the Superior Police Department and Nuckolls County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call. They were later joined by investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol.

At the house, officers found and arrested Sebastion Dunbar. He is the suspected shooter.

According to a Facebook post made by the deceased older sister, Jesse Gruber, Molly and Sebastion had been involved in a relationship and had a child together, Adda. The youngster, about two years of age was found in the home and removed.

Jesse said the couple had recently moved to Nebraska, hoping to make a fresh start. Molly’s older brother died about a month ago.

A neighbor, living in the second house north of 1216 Idaho, said she received a telephone call from a next-door neighbor, Randy Dunbar, at 11:36 Sunday evening asking if she was home. She said he sounded quite shaken and reported the neighbors to the south had been fighting most of the night and that he was about ready to go to their house when he heard a gunshot. When he went over, he found the woman laying on the floor, bleeding.

Sabastion was arrested at the crime scene and taken to the Clay County Jail where he is being held without a bail option.

Charges had not yet been filed on Tuesday but they are expected to be filed before week’s end with a possible arraignment on Wednesday, Dec. 27. The reason for his arrest was given as possible second degree murder and domestic assault. Other charges are possible.

If the case goes to trial, it is likely the Nebraska attorney general’s office will assist in the prosecution and the state, if requested, may provide a public defender.

The deceased’s body was taken to Omaha for an autopsy. The cause of death was determined to be a traumatic gunshot wound to the torso.
