Charles Shellhase

Charles Raymond Shellhase, 74, formerly of Fairbury, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2023, at Bryan West Memorial Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was born in Superior, Nebraska, Dec. 18, 1948, to Donald Delphos and Donna June (Snavely) Shellhase.

After graduating from Superior High School, he attended Fairbury Junior College where he met Sherylln Siefford of Fairbury. He would later propose to Sherylln on the steps outside of the science building at Peru State College. In the Spring of 1970, he graduated from Peru State College with a bachelor of arts degree in education. On May 24, 1970, he and Sherylln were married.

Charles taught two years at Trenton High School before moving to Fairbury. After working a variety of jobs at Fairbury Nursing Home, Canning Trucking and Principle Insurance, he settled in at his favorite job as an accountant at Jansen Co-op.

After campaigning door-to-door with sticky notes branded "Stick with Charley," he was elected to the Fairbury City Council where he served one term. Grown from a family of jokesters, Charles enjoyed entertaining. Some of his favorite memories include performing at Kiwanis Club yearly musical events, acting with the Fairbury Area Community Theater and singing with the choir at the First Christian Church.

He is survived by his ex-wife, Sherylln; brothers, Donald (Lillie) of Geneva, and Keith (Joan) of Geneva; sons, Christen (Brandee, granddaughters, Tayler and Jorjia) of Fairbury and Hunter (Kren, granddaughters, Presley and Devny) of Lincoln, Nebraska; daughter, Megan (grandson, Thayne and granddaughter, Quora) of Lincoln, Nebraska; brother-in-law, Steve Siefford (Crystal), sister-in-law, Nancy Pride (formerly Siefford), nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers-in-law, Tom Siefford and Robert Pride; aunts and uncles.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 22, 2023 at Gerdes-Meyer Chapel in Fairbury. Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home is assisting with arrangements.
