Cindy Meyer will make last mail delivery today

Meyer starts new adventure - retirement

Cindy Meyer is retiring as a Superior rural postal carrier today (Thursday, Dec. 28) after more than 25 years delivering mail. She has had three different routes, two in Nelson and the most recent one in Superior for 2 1/2 years. Meyer started as a rural carrier in Nelson before transferring to Superior.

When Cindy was not carrying mail, she was helping her husband, Brad, on their farm near Nora, with harvest, chores and taking care of the chickens, guineas, goats, dogs and cats.

The favorite part of Cindy's job as a rural mail carrier is the friendships she has made over the years with her customers and co-workers. She said the people are what she will miss in her retirement. She will even miss the pranks that some of her customers and she played on each other. For instance, Ed Epley liked to leave treasures in his mailbox for her to find. He would place them under his outgoing mails so she would have to touch whatever was underneath it. One critter she hates to find is a mouse. You guessed it! Ed put a mouse (fake) under his mail. The next day, in return she placed a mouse trap in his box with his mail.

The first days of Cindy's duty as a mail made her question her decision of taking the job. On the first day, she had a flat tire in the country. She changed the tire herself and went on with the route. During the second week of her new job, there was a terrible blizzard. Roads were blocked and she wasn't familiar yet with her route. She was quite discouraged until she opened one mailbox. The customer had placed a thank you and encouraging note in the box for her. She said after receiving those words of encouragement, she knew she could do her job! And she continued to do so for 25 years.

She said couldn't have made it through the years as a route carrier without the support of her husband. She gives a big shout out to Brad. For example, when her Jeep broke down on the route, he would bring her another vehicle so she could finish her route.

What will she do in retirement? She plans to see her two sons in Clay Center and Colorado and have more time with the lights of her life, her two grandchildren in Colorado. Gardening is another activity she will do more. Going out for coffee and visiting with her many friends is something she looks forward to. She also wants to raise more goats! She enjoys animals and will miss seeing the new baby calves along her route during the spring.
