L-N Boys Basketball split games

December 28, 2023

The L-N Raiders took a jump from the frying pan (EMF) into the fire last week. After fighting a Class C-2 team in EMF, L-N entertained one of the better Class D-2 team in the area from undefeated Shelton. They then traveled to Hampton on Thursday night and regained their winning ways with a 30-22 win. The game summaries:

BOYS VS SHELTON: 38-57: It was easy to see why the Shelton boys were undefeated going into this game. Not only were they an athletic group of boys, but they were also a tall team. One of few teams in the area that are taller than the Raiders.

The Raiders played two different games this night. The first game covered the first half of play. Shelton took half of the first period to get started, but then outscored L-N 13-3 for a first period lead.

L-N 7 2 14 15 - 38

Shelton 14 11 16 16 - 57

Very little went right for L-N in the second period. Turnovers were even, but field goals just didn't fall and Shelton made 5-8 free throws while L-N did not have a charity stripe appearance.

The second game of the night (i. e. the second half) was an entirely different game for the Raiders. In the third period the Raiders hit 50 percent of their shots and in the 4th period they hit 45 percent. L-N cut down on turnovers and Clay Williams found his shooting range hitting all of his team high scoring of 10 points in the last half of play.

L-N led in rebounding 33-31 with Clay Williams grabbing 7 and Nolan Ostdiek 6.

Although L-N didn't quite win the last half of play, one wonders just how the game may have turned out if the first half of play was an imitation of the second half.

BOYS VS HAMPTON: 30-22: It was interesting to see if the boys had had ever scored fewer points in a game and still won the game. The answer was: no . . . last year they scored fewer points on one occasion, but that game was lost. This game was won.

Those 22 Hampton points was the fewest points in any game this year, or last year.

This game started slowly for both team and the highlight of the first period seemed to be steals of which Clay Williams had two. Scoring didn't pick up a whole lot in the second period, but Sawyer Cox and Connor Janda each had steals.

Jumping ahead to the 4th period, the score was tied at 20 to 20 until Carter Griffis also got into the fun of stealing the opponent's ball, but then on the next Raider possession Carter also hit a 3-pt. shot to give L-N the lead for good.

Lawrence-Nelson Junior, Aidan Zikmund looks for a path to the basket in the EMF game. Aidan has stepped up for the injured Bayln Bargen.

We have not been able to obtain individual statistics, but for the team stats, they read like this: (L-N first and Hampton second) Rebounds 30-22; steals 8-8; Assists 7-5; FG percent 32-26; FT percent 53-9.

This week L-N plans to travel out west for the annual Holiday Tournament fun at Hershey, Nebraska, with games on Friday and Saturday.
