American Legion winter conference held in Kearney

Chuck and DeAnna Tuttle attended the Department of Nebraska Winter Conference Jan. 19 through 21. The conference attendance was also affected by snow and cold temperatures with several attendees, including the auxiliary president, getting stuck in snow banks causing late arrival times or total inability to travel. The winter conference is deemed an educational event to update members on existing and new programs and to focus on children and youth activities. A highlight of the conference is always the state oratorical contest. These contestants have won local, district and area contests to qualify for the event and are awarded scholarship amounts based on their placing in the contest. It is amazing how well versed in the Constitution these young people are and how well they are able to think on their feet for the spontaneous presentation part of the contest.

It was not all business and education with a fun evening being held at the Kearney Post on Friday evening. Featured was a chili cook-off with entries from the various districts as well as an abundance of yummy cinnamon rolls. There were five spicy and five mild offerings with a mildly spicy turkey entry taking first place and being totally gobbled up.
