Election filing deadline nears for incumbents

February 1, 2024

Unless you have been hibernating under a rock, it is hard to not know 2024 is a Presidential election year. This newspaper receives dozens of email messages daily about the national election and the area’s daily newspapers are filled with national election news.

While this is an off-year in Nuckolls County there will be one county office to be filled along with city, village and school board positions.

This issue of your newspaper contains the second official notice of the positions Nuckolls County voters will be asked to fill this year.

The only county office to be filled this year is that of county commissioner for district two. That seat is currently held by Dave Mussmann.

This year there will be four City of Superior positions to fill, three city council seats are up for election and one airport authority post.

An incumbent, Marty Pohlman, is seeking re-election to the airport authority. Incumbents Darrel Brandt and Sandra Foote have filed to continue their positions on the city council. As of Monday, a council incumbent, James Flores, had not filed for reelection.

Two council positions are up for election at Nelson. Tammy Frahm has filed for re-elecdtion, Charles Tuttle has not.

Village board positions are to be filled this year at Oak, Ruskin, Hardy, Nora and Lawrence. Incumbents include Richard Lowery, Derrick Drohman and Michael Hinz.

The Nora incumbents are Dave Gebers and Margo Williams.

Hardy incumbents are Mary Roberts, Lynda Paulk and Richard Watson. The Ruskin incumbents are Nathan Brandt, Mark Eggers and Brock Corman.

Lawrence incumbents are Sara Griffis, Terry Cox and Brett Petersen.

As of Monday none of the village board trustees had filed for re-election.

Nuckolls County is served by several school boards. The majority of the county is located in either the Superior or Lawrence-Nelson districts, however, some portions of the county are served by districts based outside the county.

For the Lawrence-Nelson board, Lance Williams and Phil Janda have filed. both are incumbents. On Monday, Phil Brockman had not filed.

Only one of the  three incumbents on the Superior School, Perry Meyer, had filed Monday. Luke Meyer and Matt Sullivan had not yet filed.

The local school district and city and village board terms are all 4-year terms.

As the candidates for the state and federal races along with the Central Community College board and the natural resources district boards are not filed in Nuckolls County, we are somewhat uncertain who has filed for those offices.

Those we know that have filed and been certified to the Nuckolls County election office are Jason Buss for the Central Community College District 1 position and Sam Cowan for the at large position.

An incumbents for the Lower Republican Natural Resources District sub-district position 5 is Lee Fintel. The Little Blue NRD has five positions to be filled. They are Lyle Schroer, district 4, Jesse VonSpreckelsen, district 5, Steven Shaw, 4 year term district 6, and Kyle Knight, two year term district 6,and Allen Wiedel, district 7. Unless stated otherwise the NRD terms are for four years.

For the primary election, the filing deadline for incumbents is Feb. 15. Non-incumbents have until March 1 to file.

Except for state filings, all other filings will be in the office of the county clerk.  Candidates for city offices are to bring a city clerk filing fee receipt with them when filing for those offices.

Filees for county partisan offices shall also file an accountability and disclosure statement of financial interest.  (Forms are available at the county clerk’s office.)

Not all of the positions will appear on the May primary ballot. When it comes to city and village positions names appear on the primary ballot only when more than two candidates file for one of the positions. For awhile this was also true for the school elections but that has changed.

Filings for the village board positions will be accepted at the county clerk’s office prior to the July 15, deadline for incumbents and prior to the August 1, deadline for non-incumbents.  This applies to the Village Board of Trustees for Lawrence, Ruskin, Hardy, Oak and Nora.

Voters also have deadlines to be concerned with. April 29 is the postmark deadline for mailed-in voter registration. The election commissioner’s office (county clerk)  will be open until 6 p.m.  April 29 is the last in person voter registration. That is also the last day the commissioner can send out ballots by mail. Mailed ballot applications have been accepted since Jan.15.

The election notice published this week indicates voters in portions of Nuckolls County will vote on four subdistrict positons with the Little Blue Natural Resources District, each will be a four-year term. They will also vote on the candidate for one two-year LBNRD term.
