Lois Ruth Vance, 87. the daughter of Jake and Katy (Yelken) Berdine, was born Oct. 17, 1936 at Lincoln, Nebraska. She died Feb. 1, at the Heritage Care Center in Red Cloud.

Lois grew up in Franklin, and graduated from the Franklin High School with the Class of 1954. She continued her formal education attending summer school at Kearney State College, receiving her certificate in normal training and became a teacher in a country school south of Macon, for two years. Lois then went to work with the Franklin newspaper and later moved to Lincoln where she was employed with Commonwealth Bank.

On Aug. 31, 1958, Lois was united in marriage with Boyd Vance at the Methodist Church in Macon. They moved to Roswell, New Mexico, while Boyd was serving his country with the United States Air Force. Lois worked for the Roswell Daily Hub in the advertising department. While they were living in Roswell, their daughter, Teresa, was born. In January of 1961, they returned to Red Cloud to farm just north of town, where they made their home for the next 60 years. In February of 1961, their son, Spencer, was born and in June of 1969, Jeff was born.

Lois was always involved in her community. For many years she ran the office at the Red Cloud Sale Barn. After she and Boyd sold their dairy herd, she went to work with Bill Elliott’s Greyhound Kennels and worked with him in various capacities for more than 15 years.

Lois was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and Methodist Women. A devoted wife, mother and grandmother, she was enthusiastically involved in their many activities including swim team, various concession stands and their baseball games.

Surviving are her husband, Boyd; daughter, Teresa, and Tom Egli of Nevada, Iowa; sons and spouses, Spencer and Randi of Ankeny, Iowa, and Jeff and Lori of Kearney; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Rose Marie Deisley.

Her funeral services was Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Red Cloud with the Rev. Dale Thiele officiating. Interment was in the Red Cloud Cemetery.
