Publishing rules change for county's delinquent taxes

February 22, 2024

This week’s issue of The Superior Express contains an offical notice delinquent property taxes within Nuckolls County.

State law provides the tax list must be published in an official newspaper once in each of the first three weeks of February, And this year for the first time, the publication also includes the name of the registered owner.

The three publication rule has long been the rule but some folks who didn’t know the legal description or did not subscribe to the newspaper in which the list was published failed to realize they had not paid their taxes as required or the person they thought was paying the taxes had not done so. There were instances in Nebraska where the owners lost the possession of their property for failure to pay taxes.

While not required to do so, the Nuckolls County Commissioners have chosen to publish the tax list at least once in all of the newspapers published within the county.

The notice published this week is for the sale of the taxes, not the properties. State law provides investors, often from out-of-state, can “buy” the taxes by making the past due payments plus associated charges and eventually gain control of the property if the owners do not make the required payments.
