SVFD keep fire from crossing U.S. Highway 136 west

Monday afternoon, members of the Superior Volunteer Fire Department responded to a grass fire five miles north and two miles west of Superior along U.S. Highway 136 west.

The department sent five trucks: two grass rigs, a pumper truck, a tanker and the rescue truck with a bumper sprayer. Seventeen men responded to the call.

The fire rapidly consumed four acres of grassland on the north side of the highway. Farmers doing some repair work sparked the fire.

"They were shocked at how fast it traveled," Scott Nondorf, fire chief said.

White, dense smoke boiled high into the sky and although the fire was relatively small, smoke blocked visibility from one side to the other for highway traffic.

Firemen were able to keep the fire from jumping the highway. The rolling terrain was dry enough to hold the grass rigs and rescue truck. A moderate, light wind drove the fire across the pasture land to the southeast.

The Nuckolls County sheriff routed traffic around the fire using country roads to the south.
