Our calendars are telling us that spring arrived a week ago and Easter is just a few days away, but Tuesday morning as I looked outside, it didn’t look like spring or Easter. Blowing snow arrived late Monday afternoon and in our farm yard, three inches of snow covered the ground. Tuesday the sun was out and the blades of grass and road ways were sparkling showing an ice covering. Yet, there is still hope for a brighter Easter as weather predictions say some of the day temperatures this week may get into the 70s. If this happens, the snow will rapidly disappear.
Easter is always looked forward to. It symbolizes new life and rebirth. From a Christian stand point, the sorrow of Good Friday and Jesus’ death on the cross is quickly changed with the arrival of Easter and Jesus’ resurrection such as when the landscape changes and all comes alive once again after the cold winter months. Green fields of new wheat, grasses come alive, early blooming flowers peek out of the ground, trees begin to show their leaves and some are flowering. Newborn calves can be seen running around the pastures, and the cranes and geese are seen and heard flying northward again.
Children are looking forward to Easter and hunting for Easter eggs and finding their surprises in an Easter basket. Families are enjoying different ways to make the hard boiled eggs colorful. Easter family dinners are being planned and looked forward to. New Easter clothes are shopped for.
Attending Easter Sunrise Services are looked forward to as a celebration, as the morning sun first appears, knowing of the meaning that Jesus’ tomb is empty. Easter breakfasts are held followed by special worship services in all the churches. Easter hymns are sung at these services, and all are thankful of the meaning of the Savior’s death and His resurrection.
Here is wishing all a happy and meaningful Easter!
