April 25, 2024

Dee Daugherty is being recognized for her exceptional generosity and thoughtfulness in creating and donating bags for occupational therapy patients who use a walker. Her selfless contributions have made a significant impact on the lives of those undergoing therapy, providing them with a practical and much-needed accessory that enhances their mobility and independence.

The Mitchell County Hospital Health Systems Occupational Therapy Department provides a range of services of both inpatients and outpatients aimed at helping them achieve optimal independence and participation in their daily activities. The vision to offer walker bags to patients was inspired by Deidra Burks, previous occupational therapy director. She shared with Dee how they would benefit her patients. From there, the journey began with Dee using her talents to create practical and stylish walker bags that would empower mobility aid users with enhanced convenience.

These bags feature multiple pockets for storage of personal items such as phones, keys, wallets and medicine, allowing patients to keep their essentials close at hand while using their walkers. The bags include easy-to-use closures to ensure they stay in place during movement. Dee also sews bags to hold reachers.

Her donations have been warmly received. Occupational therapy staff have praised Daugherty’s efforts and offer these bags exclusively to patients who will benefit from their use. To date, she has donated 125 bags to Mitchell County Hospital Health Systems. Dee also volunteers in the MCHHS Gift Shop and the Auxiliary Economy Shop.

Dee Daugherty’s work is a shining example of how one person’s kindness and creativity can make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Her dedication to helping those in need is truly inspiring.
